Vortec Dave here... was created by Dave Wikle
New member here.  Been throwing parts at my 97 K1500 Z71 (L31 vortec 5.7 with 4L60E / NP241C) for years, been watching vids here almost as long it seems.   The next part I throw at old Bessie may be a crate engine so I thought I'd ask the group here for some thoughts. I'll try to find the right forum and use "Vortec Dave" as the subject, so if you feel helpful or adventurous, please look for my upcoming plea there.   I rebuilt my first engine in 1978 while in college, most of it in my apartment kitchen, and only had 42 extra pieces when I put it back together.  That was a dodge 318.  Somehow I was able to drive it to a real mechanic's shop, how, I don't know.  I'm on my 3rd vortec, the last two pickups squished by falling trees.  I've tried my chances with lotto tickets with less luck.  My first one was a used 98 2wd silverado 5.7 with auto trans, then I built the one I wanted, a Cheyenne 5.7 with manual transmission. Tree 2 weeks after rebuilding the trans, but I got it to 22mpg hwy before the fall.  And that was with CA smog crap, CA crap gas, CA crap everything. I usually have a different word to use, but, well, you know.   So now this "new" truck had only 200k+ on it when I got it for a song because it had "piston slap."  421k now, but this past summer I ran out to AZ and back and got 19mpg hwy.  Yesterday getting 12-15mpg............  see you on the other side!
