Book / Ebook tools & diagnostic equipment was created by Jspivey
Hello all!
Does the book contain information on what type of tools and equipment one should have? I am a home mechanic who does small work on my own vehicles. I guess what I am getting at does one need to purchase the expensive diagnostic equipment or are there cheaper alternatives for a home mechanic? I already own a basic set of hand tools and a mulitmeter. However if it is not too expensive I would really love to learn how to diagnose issues and not rely on other people. Does the book cover this stuff for people like me?

Noah posted a tools list put together by the mods listing enough basic tools to cover all the way from occasional DIY to a full pro diagnostic bay just cherry pick your way down the list choosing on what you think you will need and budget and the cars you will expect to work on.
www.scannerdanner.com/forum/diagnostic-t...-tool-set.html#25007
The two first buy tools are probably test lights old style tungsten and LED ---- I actually use one of those little LED battery-alternator testers in place of an LED test light.
A scan tool has deliberately left of the list because they can cost anywhere from 10$ to 10,000$ Don't underestimate how much you can diagnose with a 10$ Bluetooth dongle and an Android device but remember they will only cover OBD2 engine and transmission codes, so I would advise as an absolute minimum buying a scan tool that at least; Reads & Graphs Live Data, reads and clears ABS & Airgbag. Also you may need electronic parking brake reset and steering angle reset. More expensive scan tools have bi-directional controls and test but there tends be quite a step up in price.
There are also scantools made by iCarsoft and others that specialize in depth coverage for one or two brands for example BMW & MINI! or Jaguar & Land-Rover or Toyota & Lexus. These tend to offer a lot of features for the cost.
In the US Autel, Launch and OTC all sell scantools covering the occasional to serious DIYer level. Where I am in Europe the equivalent list would be Autel, Launch and Foxwell.

That is the list I am looking for. Thank you. Nothing too outrageous on that list. I may need to upgrade my multimeter. The scan tool is going to be my biggest investment. I would want one that graphs the live data. Ill purchase the book based on this information. I purchased a used car that has a few issues. The oscillioscope was one of the tools I was worried about. Those can be a little pricey. Are there any scan tools that are dodge / chrysler / jeep specific?

Don't spend a fortune on a multimeter for automotive work. There is no need to buy a Fluke for even serious DIY work.
For a multimeter look at the Uni-T UT203 --- note UT203 as although Uni-T do a good range of budget meters the UT203 has a DC current clamp meter function.
Also the Owon B35T is quite popular among the forum mods.
Recommending a scantool there is no perfect solution and the manufactuers have a very confusing system of model numbers so it really depends on how much money you want to spend but Autel or Launch or OTC or Foxwell from about $130 upwards is a good starting point. But buy from a reputable supplier . Also keep in mind you can read basic engine and transmission fault codes an live data with a 10$ "ELM327" dongle and a cell phone and there an Android Jeep app called JSCAN --- how good it is I don't know
I don't know anything about US Chrysler-Jeep specific scan tools as the ones currently the roads in Europe are mainly the models that use FIAT technology (for these there is a really excellent windows software Fiat MultiECUscan).
AutoEnginuity has decent Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge and some Fiat coverage but think carefully if you want to go down that route,
