Crank sensor circuit out of range was created by bruce.oliver
2000 buick lesabre 3.8 Think it was a p0336. CKP sensor circuit out of range. Couldn't get the car to act up. Scoped the crank signal going into and out if the ICM. All looked good while running. But then noticed 200 rpm on the 18x signal on scan data. Checked the crank signal going into ICM 0 volts. Signal coming out was a steady 5 volts. Customer declined repairs. Would that 200 rpm on the 18x signal and 0 rpm on the 3x signal KOEO set the crank sensor out of range code?

Hey bruce, good question! I wasn't sure off the top of my head, so I dug into my library for some examples.

First one I found was off a '03 Impala, same 3.8L. Here's a shot of the signals KOEO and after it started:

This one showed 105 RPM on the 18X signal with the engine off. Then I found a 2000 Bonneville, which showed something really strange:

12136 RPM? :silly:

Anyway, I think that 18X PID just likes to say what it wants with the engine off. Probably not related to your P0336.

Thanks. I hate it when you can't duplicate a problem like that

I notice lots of illogical KOEO PIDs. I try not to let it tangle me up if they're not related to a specific symptom. In your case, having that code, I would have wondered about it. Good thing Tyler has such an expansive library of scan and scope captures!

I've watched it before but just watched Paul's vid on 3.8 crank sensor testing and scan data in the vid showed the 18x signal at 2764rpm. He didn't say anything about it so I guess maybe he was just used to seeing it like that.
