2007 Audi S4 - 4.2L V8 (non FSI) - Cylinder 3 Misfire - Standard Diagnoses Done was created by milk
I have been chasing an elusive cylinder 3 misfire with off and on work since end of June.
Without having the tools or knowledge for a lot of the technical diagnosis that ScannerDanner does, I ended up replacing a few more things, though there is also reason to warrant these. Anyway, I would like to use better diagnosis to finally figure this out, the way ScannerDanner would tell us to. That said, here is where I am.
Any help, direction, or recommended mobile mechanics in the Greater Seattle (Kitsap County) area is greatly appreciated!
- Initially had misfire on cylinder 8, very rough, had car towed as it was a good distance home and I have AAA
- Did a compression test and found cylinder 3 had low 95psi dry compression (cold test) and fine wet compression (right back in line with the other cylinders after a drop of oil)
- Pulled spark plugs and they were pretty dirty, not terrible, so went ahead and replaced them and swapped cylinder 8 ignition coil with cylinder 3 (had a brain fart I guess, dont know why I chose the low comp cylinder) and it ran great for 300 miles. I also replaced fuel filter at the same time, just as regular maintenance.
- Cruising along at 35mph and begins running real rough, same as when cylinder 8 began misfiring so I pulled over and grabbed the code, cylinder 3 misfire. I thought easy, just replace the ignition coil and be done with it as I had a new one with me in the car. Went to replace and snapped a brittle coolant line in the process so had to wait to get new part. Replaced coolant elbow, topped off coolant, replaced ignition coil, cleared codes, started it up and misfire was still there, now registering multiple misfire codes across both banks.
- Checked all connections, vacuum lines, seating of injectors and coils... all seemed fine. Moved all ignition coils around and moved spark plugs on cylinder 3. Nothing changed, just misfire stuck to cylinder 3 and other cylinders misfiring kept changing (no consistency in the multiple cylinder random misfire DTCs other than cylinder 3)
- AAAd the car home so I could further diagnose with VAGCOM
- Checked battery, resting, and idle voltage all seem good. Tested fuel pump relay (which also controls a lot of other evap and related). Tested fuel pressure at resting and while running, all good and steady. Had fuel injectors tested and calibrated. They tested mostly fine and were consistent before cleaning. Replaced all ignition coils. Pulled and split IM to check intake flapper. Pulled oil valley pan and replaced oil check valves (mostly as preventative for possible chain tension issues on cold starts, gotta save the chain on these!) and those looked good. All intake valves looked good. Ran output tests via VAGCOM and each injector seems to be firing and all other tested solenoids valves etc operated properly. Pulled front spark plugs and they look good as well. Disconnected MAF while running and no change in RPM. Ran an open propane torch around the motor and in front of the intake, also no change in RPM.
- After putting the IM back on and starting it up with most of the above work done it ran a little rough at first, then evened out for about a minute, then began misfiring on just cylinder 3 again. A couple more cold starts and it idles mostly fine for about the first minute then gets a very rough misfire on cylinder 3. I dont like letting it run for more than a couple minutes due to how bad the misfire is. It actually slowly drops the RPM enough that it would eventually die out on its own.
Any help, direction, or recommended mobile mechanics in the Greater Seattle (Kitsap County) area is greatly appreciated!
