I just got this car from a mechanic friend who said DLC showed 287D VANOS Inlet actuator movement/actuator stop. Being so cramped an engine compartment, I could not even unplug to check wires. So I ended up removing the VANOS solenoid, and only then was I able to unplug the connector. I directly activated the solenoid via battery and was working. In the absence of a wiring diagram, I have not check wiring integrity. Has anybody come across a problem like this with a MINICOOPER CLUBMAN? Is this related with tythe CMP/CKP sensors? What direction can be suggested to start with. BTW the way, owner said that prior to the check engine lights, she filled up oil which was very very low. It was after a few days filling up the required amount did the DLC come on...

Thanks for the diagram. It looks like the solenoid is powerside. I remember a video by Paul, I believe a Subaru VTEC. The owner has decided to leave the car with me. I will view that video and take it from there. I guess I have to scope both CKP/CMP for relationship as well check timing too. I will give an update on how it goes, with fingers crossed.

This the waveform I just did...i cannot find a similar waveform anywhere. So Im presuming this is a good waveform.

These are the waveform I got for the #1 in-cylinder compression and coil signal...at a glance, TDC is occuring before spark event (per computation abut 2.3 degrees of crankshaft rotation per sec). I dont know of the vehicles exact timing in degress but per Paul it should occur close to zero degrees, if not zero).

Likewise, here are the Intake and Exhaust VANOS waveform. I noticed that there was no change in frequency when revving up the engine.

Starting from a cold engine, as soon as RPM drops from 1100 RPM to about 1000, engine would experience a "hiccup" and set a fault code of 287D (PO012) - Intake Vanos solenoid actuator problem. The Intake Vanos solenoid was changed before hand, but as mentioned frequency does not change despite rev up.

Can you access scan data?so that you can see what the valve advance is,or doing,any bi directional actuator tests available,any pids for desired verus actual,position.

at the moment these are all the remaining waveforms I have and the corrresponding changes in Voltage including the point, at 3.68 secs, frame 2, where the engine would "hiccup" momentarily setting PO0012/287D

Unfortunately the owner had to pick up the car as she needed it for work.

KOEO, the exhaust VANOS solenoid control wire showed 1.56 V plugged-in; and 1.93 unplugged, other wire read 0V plugged-in.

the intake VANOS control wire (which I was not able to save) i remember exhibited the same voltage reading, plugged-in and unplugged...

UPDATE

I spoke with the owner and as advised, they went to the dealership regarding the problem. Dealer updated software that reconfigured the whole timing system with the newly installed intake VANOS solenoid. This vehicle is considered FIXED
