God bless you my brother's and sister's.
After rebuilding the engine the flex plate rubs on the plate between the trans and engine. If I put a spacer between crankshaft and the flex plate I get the space I need. Question is will it be OK to do this. Here is a picture of spacer

Probably? How thick is that shim? Not sure on that one, sir. Having the clearance is good, but you've obviously got concerns about starter engagement and mating with the torque converter.

Is it possible you left one out? I know the 2az motor of this era has a spacer, the flex plate, then another shim or large washer like you posted under the head of the bolts.
Not sure what powers your tercel sorry.

Brother Tyler sorry it took long for the response I was at a retreat. Matt I was thinking the same thing the thing is that a junk yard put the trans on before I rebuilt the engine.
The shim that I'm showing on the pic is the one that goes in the front if I present it on the crankshaft then put the flex plate I get the clearance. Another question what if I just put it in the back and not in front of the flex plate?
Shim thickness is 1.40 mm. If I put washers on the starter the flex plate clears it but it still runs on the plate that goes between the engine and transmission. With shim in place it clears plate and the starter but don't know if it will cause a problem with the torque converter.
Thank you for your help

I'd confidently put one behind the Flexi plate and be done with it. Not sure if I was clear last post. The washer I referred to is the same or similar to the shim. In other words it's one "washer" that does all the bolts.
