Multimeter with a Duty Cycle scale should be enough tell you if the engine computer is signalling the alternator to produce more current.
If your meter lacks a duty cycle scale with engine running on the L terminal with a decent battery on the battery when with everything working well using a DC voltage scale expect to see 50 to 60% of battery voltage. If battery voltage is low or alternator is not working expect to see close to battery voltage.

well followed the flow chart i found it says key on engine off connector unplugged from alternator should be 0 volts. then start the engine should be near 5 volts on the l terminal. my friend will be putting an alternator on. we did find a broken wire it read what it was supposed to at the pcm but not at the alternator. thought it was fixed but it wasnt.
