So I’m looking into buying this guys 03 lancer oz rally edition but he ran diagnostics and two codes came back P0421 and P0302. I know the first is cat below threshold and the second is cylinder 2 misfiring. What I want to know is when I go to take a look at the car, what should I be checking to make sure I’m not buying a car that’s going to cost me more money than it’s worth? Or can you already tell it’s not worth it just by those codes. Any other suggestions would be appreciated too. Thanks!

I would check the ignition that the cylinder is missing. You probably have an ignition problem causing fuel to be dumped causing the cat to go bad.

Quick test to see if it's a coil issue: swap the coils and see if the cylinder 2 misfire goes away.

Start watching at 09:11 and Paul will swap the coils in the video and you can see the tools he's using for the job.

Thank you for the information and recommendation. Would it be a good idea to get a compression test kit and check cylinder 2 before buying?

I think that'd depend on how much use you think you'd get out of it? You could always rent one from a local parts store if you don't want to spend the money on a good test set.
If I was the perspective buyer here, I'd probably settle for an audible relative compression test. Quick, simple, and doesn't require any disassembly. If I didn't hear an issue, I'd roll with it.
