Help us help you. By posting the year, make, model and engine near the beginning of your help request, followed by the symptoms (no start, high idle, misfire etc.) Along with any prevalent Diagnostic Trouble Codes, aka DTCs, other forum members will be able to help you get to a solution more quickly and easily!
I have a 1997 Ford ranger 2.3L manual transmission 2wd, standard can Flareside (stepside) 182k miles . This was the last year of the Lima motor and the first year(half year) of the pcm handling the ignition control instead of the seperate ICM on previous rangers.
Truck has intermittent cylinder 3 misfire count usually when the engine revs above 3k and comes back down the misfire count increases after rpms settle back down also happens when maintaining speed at higher RPM and step on clutch to coast or slow down the misfire count increases by 1-30 counts.
SEEMS worse on colder days or when I don't allow the truck to warm up.
Sometimes I'll go 20 miles before any misfire counts start happening on cyl 3.
Sometimes it'll misfire at idle frst start in the morning when cold and the misfiee count shoots up to 180+ in 5 minutes of driving and throws a CEL. once warm the misfire count either stops increasing or increases slowly on coasting/decelerating and count goes up really slow by 1-30 each misfire "event"....
I've tested primary and secondary resistances on both coilpacks. I replaced plugs and wires since Previous owner had generic wires on there instead of motorcraft wires...coilpack resistance tested within spec I also ran the truck on ONE coil pack at a time to see if one coilpack was the issue and misfire behavior was unchanged running on each coilpack individually so I don't think it's the coilpacks themselves unless it's a signal wire for cyl 3 only but I think there are 2 different signal wires for the 2 coilpacks cyl 3 aka too coincidental for two different wires to have a short or bad ground on the same cylinder(?).
Replaced cyl 3 fuel injector for good measure (resistance checked all injector and all were within spec.
Checked for vacuum leaks and haven't found any tubes or ports that suck in any gas or carb cleaner.
Cleaned engine bay ground wires and mounting points with an angle grinder and wire wheel.
Added marvel mystery oil into each cylinder for a piston soak for 3 days and vacuumed the fluid out prior to reassemble hoping to free potentially stuck rings (old timer across the street recommended ) also poured the rest of the marvel mystery oil into the crankcase to work on the valve train and rest of the engine.
Replaced fuel filter with motorcraft repalcment for good measure only 7 to 10 bucks.
Not sure what normal vacuum pressure is but according to my Bluetooth adapter and TORQUE BHP app on my phone I get 12 inchs/hg at idle .
Misfire count still happening intermittently. On cold rare days it misfires under load on acceleration until it warms up then it only increase count on deceleration or when I press the clutch in to coast (or pull it out of gear without clutch press without brake pedal press)
Brake booster tested fine no internal leaks causing vacuum bleeding fyi. Drove with the intake vacuum tube plugged off disconnected from booster also and with manual brakes (aweful ) misfiee is unchanged.
Fuel pressure regulator does not spit fuel when the vacuum hose is disconnected so regulator isn't leaking fluid into the vacuum hose.
Compression test showed inconsistent numbers (depending on who I've asked online) borderline out of spec for cyl variation.
Dry:
Cyl1 : 140
Cyl 2: 120
Cyl 3: 120
Cyl 4: 145
Wet
Cyl 1: 160
Cyl 2: 140
Cyl 3: 135
Cyl 4: 170
Don't have a compressor or money for renting the leakdown tester from AutoZone YET. also never used a leakdown tester so it'll be a YouTube learning experience for me.
Also replaced PCV valve looked old and maybe original it broke in half at the slightest touch .
I guess other than a burnt valve , or sticking lifters/tappets does anyone know if a bad cam position sensor can intermittently only affect ONE cylinder? Same with crank position sensor ?
Same with bad PCM, can bad pcm cause ONLY one cyl misfire and intermittently ?
I did the dollar bill test on the exhaust pipe and it doesn't seem to suck the dollar bill in EVER. Im going to eventually remove the valve cover and get a visual inspect on the valve springs and tappets.
When I goose the throttle I can see my graph of timing advance vs misfiee count and the only coorelation I can see is the timing advance goes up and down and once it goes down and rpms have dropped to normal the engine timing advance had a small/medium BUMP where it blips itself up for a tiny bit and back down... The misfire count seems directly related to that miniature bounce in timing after the throttle blip.
