‘08 Audi A4 White Exhaust Smoke Misfire Fuel Injector Wiring Problem was created by NotAnElectrician
Hi, I am having a problem with fuel injector #2 in my 2008 Audi a4 b7 3.2L v6. The fuel injector is stuck open and is causing the exhaust to dump out white smoke as well as the #2 cylinder to misfire. I foolishly assumed replacing the injector would fix this however, with a new injector in place the problem has not changed. I am not good with electrical stuff and have no idea where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This probably is not a GDI injection system, is it?
If not then check wether the injector's control wire is shorted to ground. If it is not the ECU injector driver is.
Disconnecting the new injector should stop him from dumping fuel.

How would I check for short to ground? I can’t find a wiring diagram and I am not good with this electrical stuff. I don’t know if it’s “gdi” but it is definitely direct injected. Do you think resetting the ecu could possibly work?

Cylinder #2 misfire was the code. I know it’s a stuck open injector because it’s running extremely rough and after I ran the engine for a bit looking down in the cylinder revealed a large amount of liquid pooled up which I confirmed was gasoline. Then I went ahead and tested the compression on the cylinder and air was coming out of the injector. So I assumed the injector was stuck open and replaced the injector. After replacing the injector the cylinder was able to hold compression so I assumed the problem was fixed, but after I tested the car again clearly nothing had changed. I didn’t see anything clearly damaged with the wiring, but I don’t know how to test that stuff anyway.

Tried resetting the ecu with no luck. Still running rough and still dumping raw fuel. Hopefully it’s just a problem with the wiring going to fuel injectors 1-3. Still not sure how to test that, unfortunately. Also if anyone knows where I can get a relevant wiring diagram I would greatly appreciate it!

You may find the wiring diagram in the free Carmin app. Both 4 and 6 cylinder engines are covered there I believe.
Because of dealing with direct injection it's NOT probable that it's just a simple short to ground. These injectors are both hi and low side controlled.
No offense ment but you may consider to take your car to a knowledgeable mechanic.

Thank you so much this app looks perfect. I would love to hear more about how these injectors are controlled. I thought it just sent a simple 5v pulse to open the injector. Are these designed differently?

These injectors are pulsed, but with peaks of probably 60 to 80 volts on the positive side and they are also pulsed on the ground side.

Final update: I was able to seemingly solve the problem after replacing the fuel injector wiring harness. I tested the old harness and all the wires seemed to be working properly and there was no visible damage so I’m not 100% that was the actual problem. Anyway, I installed the new harness and started up the car with no change, then I realized there was one connector on the front of the upper intake manifold that I forgot to plug in. After plugging this in the car worked perfectly! Also, It produced the gasoline white smoke once immediately after startup for about 10-15 seconds on a cold day, but other than that one incident I haven’t had any problems since.
