Toyota Camry P1300 Igniter circuit was created by Josh87
Hey all,

Ive got a friend with an 01 Toyota Camry with a 5SFE engine. It's got the 2 coil waste spark system.

I've only had a quick look at it, but he's had an ongoing issue with Ignition coil number 1. The coil failed about a year ago, he got it replaced by his mechanic and it failed again within about 8 months. He then got it replaced again and it failed after a week, replaced it again and then it failed again another week later. Parts used were genuine Toyota.

We drove it for about 20 minutes today and there was no fault. I wiggled the wiring harness to see if I could get it to fault but didn't affect it.

He said it's quite intermittent but usually happens when he's on the highway or after a decent drive, the engine will cut out and won't start. He will leave it for about 30 minutes and it runs fine again. To me that definitely seems like an ignition coil fault due to it happening when it's hot.

It's coming up with fault code P1300 ignition signal 1 - circuit malfunction.

His mechanic has suggested the ECM might be faulty and wants to send it off for testing/inspection. I'm sure the mechanic would've changed plugs and leads hopefully. But they looked ok when I pulled them.

So just wondering if there's anything else to check before sending the ECM off? Might even be easier to find a 2nd hand ECM and chuck that in there. Im gonna suggest he put new plugs and leads on it just to be sure.

Cheers

Josh
