2012 Dodge Durango 3.6L Multiple misfires P0300 and P2097 was created by myankow
Hi. This multiple misfire is happening on my 224k mile 2012 durango 3.6. Started 2 days ago right after a fill up and rainy day. have had an occasional misfire in the past and it has always gone away. The P0300 is now consistent and mostly miscounts on cylinder 5 mostly.., 1 and 3. Only have a simple OBD2 reader. Also now have a P2097 code. Replaced 5 yr old battery with new INterstate H7. After reconnecting battery yesterday motor ran great. let idle for about 20 minutes while cleaned up, closed hood and took it for drive. Various speeds to about 45mph. Some stop lights. All good. Pull into driveway (slight incline) felt a misfire at idle. Same codes as before. took for longer drive, raining out. seemed ok but OBD reader saying more misfires and additional O2 and P2097 codes. Raining park and leave till today. Always starts. Fuel pump recall relay was done years ago. Can NOT perform RESET with OBD2 reader as shown on Utube video.
Plan of action today: Will reread codes again. Write them down. will disconnect battery and push brake pedal for 30 seconds. Connect battery and start over. will disconnect to battery reset computer system?
EDITED to UPDATE:
Changed Plugs While engine cold on Bank1. Intake Plenum not needed to be removed... New Champion plugs same P/N as old ones. Put coil caps back in same positions. OLD plugs were showing signs of age.
Started engine, check engine light is OUT. Running fine. Read codes.
1/6-P0171 Too lean Bank1
2/6-P0300 Multiple misfires
3/6-P2097 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim to Rich Bank 1
4/6-P0131 O2 Sensor circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1
5/6-P0300
6/6-P2097
Did not reset anything took for drive. No misfires. pulled over. Cleared Codes.
Check Engine light went out but 2 codes remain:
P0171 Too lean Bank1
P0300 Multiple misfires
P2097 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim to Rich Bank 1
OBD2 Reader test on B1S1 sensor said failed. Heater circuit passed.. will buy one since soo many miles on vehicle. finger crossed this is fix. Not a fan of cleaning O2 sensor.
Old School guy,...Thanks for the Forum and Utube videos. already watched about 4 hours worth !!!
New UPDATE:
OK just watched another video. Don't want to be a parts changer.. So the fuel trim was negative so now looking at O2 wiring harness see if it has Fuel rail diafram and will be back.

I just wanted to say that the code may not "disappear" when cleared thanks to the addition of "Permanent Codes". It's a way for techs or inspection stations to tell that someone has made a repair recently and cleared the OBD data. They will clear from memory after having passed the internal self test.
I would probably want to look into the oxygen sensor operation on bank one. The B1S1 lean code combined with the B1S2 post catalyst too rich code makes me think the upstream my be lying.
You can watch the sensors on the data while you introduce a vacuum leak to force them lean and some propane or brake clean to drive them rich.
Or if you feel like getting dirty you could swap upstream sensors bank to bank, if it's not going to open a can of worms.

Thanks Noah. As far as swapping the B1S1 upstream sensor is very difficult to get to, alone remove. So not going to swap. As an FYI one of the videos says to be sure and buy OEM. Well Dodge wants upwards of $200 for 1 Sensor. So pleasantly obtained the part numbers and went to my local AUTOZ*** store and bought 2 for about $35 each. Back to results:
Changes B1S1 upstream, but had to remove B1S2 downstream to accomplish the task. After installing upstream reinstalled old downstream since it was not acting up and then got vehicle back on ground and started took for ride. starting to rain again. got codes still saying Post catalyst too Rich Bank 1. Also a new code P000B 'B' Camshaft position sensor Slow response Bank 1....My little OBD tool also has a graph function not the best but was able to graph Bank1S2 against B2S2 and noticed that they were no longer displaying a similar graph. They were prior to the removal of the downstream sensor.
So decided that I would wait till next day and install NEW sensor into downstream position Bank 1. OK this was done and vehicle back on ground and now both bank1 and bank 2 downstream sensors are displaying similar graphs. Cleared Codes after initial test drive.. Took vehicle for another test drive and No codes showing at all.
Summary: I think B1S1 was faulting due to Bank 1 valve cover dripping oil onto sensor. possibly got into O2 Wire harness. Now will go next step and replace the valve cover gasket on that side. For 224,000 miles not complaining about vehicle, but really perturbed that the computer has taken over all aspects and tries to let you know what is wrong but really does a poor job of it. then compensates by adjusting other components to remedy the problem. This computer should have told me your gasket needs replacing !! I am getting too old for this....
Thanks for the advice. and as for clearing the codes it takes a combination of clearing, starting, clearing, starting or similiar to get to a point where freeze frame is erased and misfires too...BTW no more misfires !!

Hi. I'm having the same issues. Random misfire and cylinder 1 misfire. I've changed the plugs, and coil number 1. Took it for a ride and pops the same codes, but now has P000A code, slow cam shaft. It sat for a day, started and no P0301 or P000A. Just random misfire. Drives ok until low speed shifting from 6th to 5th. starts shuttering and loss of power. I stop, turn the engine off and start again and drives ok. seems to have issues when engine is under load its pops the codes. At times the check engine light turns off while driving and then pops back on. Jsut seeing if you are still misfire free after changing the senors. Thanks!

Hey there Bunel76!
If you require assistance with your issue, I encourage you to start your own repair advice topic.
That way there's not a bunch of unrelated posts before yours, or after the OPs vehicle has been fixed.
Since you are asking a follow up question about his repair, no harm done, but if you need more advice it is best to start a new topic.
Thanks for understanding
