Coolant temp cut out..? was created by Ash03
Hi guys

I have a question as Im not sure if what I want to do is possible..

A friend of mine owns a few KIA K2700 vans.. Its a 2.7 Diesel, injector pump driven - and not so electronic...

He is having problems where the drivers of the vehicles fail to see the cluster (coolant temp gauge) and 3 vans heated up so badly that the engines had to be scrapped.

Is it possible to wire up some kind of coolant temp cut out where the vehicle would cut out on its own after reaching a certain temp?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey great question! It is possible you would need to add a aquastat and several relays it would take a small amount of designing but certainly doable

I'll draw 1 up for you sourcing the parts will be harder than the wiring you will need some sort of aquastat a snap switch glued to a freeze plug may work and be easier to get than a cooling fan aquastat with that high of a kick on adjustment from there you just wire in a 5 post relay to the ignition and us the normally closed side to allow current to flow to keep injection pump on when the snap switch closes in a over heat it will send power to relay and switch on which will open the normally closed side until it cools down

It can be done very easily using a 110c N.C. thermo switch of the type used on washing machines but for road saftey reasons I would advise not wiring an engine shutdown and use instead loud buzzer & bright warning light. To wire a warning buzzer or light you would want a 110c N.O. thermo switch which can found cheaply on ebay. The more expensive way of tripping a warning light/buzzer is to use an adjustable thermo switch sold for after market cooling fans,

ebay.com Link adjustable fan switch

The problem is really caused by the way temperature gauges work on modern vehicles the dash reading is driven by the vehicles computers to stay firmly centered on "N" between about 65c and 115c which is fine as long as the cooling system is holding pressure but if it isn't the coolant will boil. Antifreze-coolant under pressure in the radiator normally boils are around 118 to 120c if the glycol anfreeze concentration is lower or there is pressure leak this can drop to 100c.

I was also going to suggest a buzzer instead of hooking it to the ignition that way you would have a moment to safely pull over

Thanks for the info guys, I will try the 110c N.O switch just to test the application then improvise from there onwards.. The buzzer also seems like a good idea - depending on what the owner prefers..

When I source all the stuff I need, I will probably need some guidence regarding the wiring.. Seems quite simple though
