Primary ignition waveform questions was created by DGB
Good afternoon all. New Premium member, also new to the lab scope. I took some readings on a 93 Wrangler 2.5L M/T (amp clamp on primary negative) 2 wire coil and am trying to identify what I am seeing here. Looks like nothing I have seen while doing my research. Any input would be greatly appreciated. If I did this correct there should be 3 screen shots attached here. Looking at these wave forms I am leaning twords the ignition driver in the SBEC is not switching correctly. The vehicle has a hard constant miss, feels like it is only firing on 2 cylinders. Good Cam and crank signal happy to post those if needed.

Your screenshots are wild, DGB! Is your amp scale correct? 'Cause it looks like the coil is drawing 80-ish amps at times. I don't have a known good dwell time for a coil on a 4.0L, but 30+ ms is an eternity. I'm surprised the coil hasn't overheated, or popped the fuse. Or smoked the coil driver.
I don't blame you at all for suspecting the PCM, but I'd want to have another look at the cam/crank before pulling the trigger on a replacement. Would you mind posting the waveforms?

Glad I'm not the only one that thought this signal looked nuts. Not what I expected at all. Clamp 20a scale Scope at 10:1 ignition preset. The jeep is a 2.5L the coil was recently replaced, went bad. Another thing I should mention, I had .256mv AC ripple coming from the alternator. .256mv is excesive but I do not know if it's enough to damage a computer. Alternator has been replaced. Need to download cam and crank. Back shortly

Another afterthought. Scan tool is reading a crazy RPM signal. While the engine tach show bouncing between 500 and 2000 rpm scan tool shows it jumping to 6000, 7000 and 8000RPM. Scan tool issue or computer issue, I do not know. Tool is a snap on Red Brick
