I am new to this. I am in chapter one, and Paul mentions doing a Hydro Carbon Test. This might be a very basic question for most of you but by means do I perform this test? Thank you in advance for your help.

A Hydrocarbon test requires the use of a 4 or 5-gas analyzer.
A 4-gas analyzer samples air and measures the amount of:
1) CO (Carbon Monoxide)
2) CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
3) HC (Hydrocarbons)
4) O2 (Oxygen)
A 5-gas analyzer measures all of those, plus:
5) NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen).
To do the test, remove the radiator or overflow cap and use the gas analyzer to sample the air within the cooling system. Be careful not to suck coolant into the gas analyzer.
If you haven't seen it, yet, here is a video that discusses this test.
